Spring Cleaning, Critters, and Chaos
Posted by Benjamin Stevens on
Spring has sprung, and with it, the annual ritual of spring cleaning. For many, it’s a daunting task, a symbol of purging winter’s clutter and welcoming fresh beginnings. For us, with four kids, seven cats, two dogs, a menagerie of smaller critters, and the general whirlwind of a busy household, spring cleaning feels less like a ritual and more like a Herculean feat.
Let’s be honest, maintaining a spotless home with this many furry (and human) inhabitants is a constant battle. Dust bunnies wage war against our vacuum, paw prints decorate freshly mopped floors within minutes, and the scent of "eau de wet dog" can linger longer than we’d like. Yet, we persist. Why? Because research consistently demonstrates the profound impact a clean and tidy environment has on our mental and physical well-being.
Studies have shown that a cluttered space can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and even depression. A clean and organized home, on the other hand, promotes feelings of calm, productivity, and overall happiness. It’s not just about aesthetics; it's about creating a sanctuary where we can recharge, focus, and thrive. And with our chaotic crew, a sanctuary is exactly what we need.
This year, we’re tackling spring cleaning with a secret weapon: soapnuts. These little wonders of nature have revolutionized our cleaning routine. For those unfamiliar, soapnuts are berries that contain saponin, a natural surfactant that creates a soapy lather when agitated in water. They’re gentle, effective, and incredibly versatile.
Our first conquest? The windows. With sticky fingerprints and nose smudges from curious cats, they were a mess. A simple solution of soapnut liquid, made by boiling a handful of soapnuts in water, and a microfiber cloth left them sparkling.
Next, the kitchen. With crumbs, spills, and the general chaos of family meals, it was a battleground. The soapnut liquid tackled greasy surfaces, wiped down countertops, and even cleaned the oven with surprising ease. We also used it to mop the floors, leaving them clean and smelling fresh, without any harsh chemical residue that could irritate sensitive paws or little feet.
The bathroom, a perpetual challenge with so many users, surrendered to the power of soapnuts. Soap scum, toothpaste splatters, and general grime were no match for its gentle yet effective cleaning power. We even used it to clean the toilet, leaving it sparkling and naturally deodorized.
The beauty of soapnuts lies in their versatility. We’ve used them to clean everything from our furniture to our pet beds, and even to wash our laundry. They’re gentle enough for sensitive skin, making them perfect for our family, and they’re environmentally friendly, which aligns with our desire to minimize our impact on the planet.
Of course, even with soapnuts, keeping our home perfectly tidy is an ongoing process. We’ve learned to embrace the chaos a little, to laugh at the muddy paw prints, and to celebrate the small victories. We’ve also learned that involving the kids in the cleaning process, even if it’s just sweeping or dusting, instills a sense of responsibility and teaches them valuable life skills.
Spring cleaning isn't just about scrubbing and organizing; it's about creating a space where we can breathe, relax, and connect with our loved ones, both human and furry. It’s about finding balance amidst the chaos, and finding joy in the simple act of creating a clean and happy home. And with the help of soapnuts, we’re one step closer to achieving that goal, one paw print at a time.
